Stupid Events is everything we've ever dreamed of.
Not in a cheesy, "follow your dreams" kind of way. In a very real way.
It's the idea we talked about during our first week of dating. The thing we'd imagine while working long hours for other people. The business we'd sketch out over drinks after work, joke about, and quietly build toward for years.
And somehow, here we are.
We met while working in Asheville. Kate was the General Manager. Brett was rolling pasta one day a week. One thing led to another. Now we're married, own a company together, and have somehow never not worked together. Depending on who you ask, that's either incredibly romantic or a terrible idea. For us, it's worked out pretty damn well.
At this point, we can practically communicate telepathically. A glance across the room is usually enough. And while that might sound a little ridiculous, it's also one of the things that makes Stupid Events what it is.
Over the years, we've built restaurants, events, careers, a marriage, and eventually Stupid Events. Somewhere along the way, we discovered that we each bring something completely different to the table.
One of the defining moments of our careers came in 2023, when The Market Place in downtown Asheville was named a James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant. At the time, Brett was serving as Chef and Kate as General Manager. Being recognized at that level was an incredible honor, but getting to experience it together made it even more meaningful.
Standing in that room together was incredible, but not because of the nomination itself. It was a reflection of years spent building something side by side.
And honestly, that's still what we're doing.
Just with our own name on the door.
kate is a designer, planner, logistics expert, spreadsheet enthusiast, and occasional magician.
she's obsessed with how a space feels. not how it photographs. not how trendy it is. how it feels.
the energy when guests walk through the door. the way a room unfolds throughout the evening. the details nobody notices because they're working exactly as they should.
she has an almost alarming amount of attention to detail and an inability to let things be "good enough." it's what drives brett crazy.
it's also why clients trust her with some of the biggest days of their lives.
when things go sideways, and eventually something always does, she's the person you want in your corner.
brett doesn't know how to do simple. it's also what makes him exceptional. he's constantly asking questions. what if we pushed this further? what if we made it better? what if we did something nobody expects?
for brett, food has never just been food. it's how he tells stories.
raised in western north carolina, he spent years cooking, learning, and refining his craft before eventually finding his way back home. along the way, he developed a deep appreciation for southern appalachian foodways, local ingredients, and the people who keep those traditions alive.
today, that influence shows up in everything he creates. not because it's trendy. because it's who he is.His food is thoughtful without being pretentious, creative without trying too hard, and rooted in a genuine respect for place, seasonality, and hospitality.
a meal is never just a meal.
it's community. it's connection. it's the family you're born into and the family you choose. it's where stories are shared, celebrations unfold, and memories are made.
